UScellular and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia Announce Hispanic Heritage Month Art Contest

In early September, Boys & Girls Club members were busy creating original pieces of artwork in recognition of influential Hispanic STEM icons, including historical figures, world leaders, scientists and educators. This year,11 club locations operated under the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia participated in the art contest.



From Sept. 15 to Sept. 22, the public was able to participate in online voting to determine the winners three winners. The top vote-getters from the Club were given gift cards for the following amounts at a special ceremony at the club's 9th street location.


● 1st place winner of a $250 gift card was Markeysha W. from G.W. Carver Elementary School

for a drawing of Ellen Ochoa!

● The 2nd place winner of a $150 gift card was Jazaria E. from Patrick Henry High School

for a drawing of Helia Bravo Hollis.

● The 3rd place winner of a $100 gift card David P. from the Eastern Montgomery High School for a drawing of Franklin Chang-Diaz.


“Having the opportunity to provide Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia members with a chance to showcase their talents in the Hispanic Heritage Month Art Contest has been a fantastic experience,” said Nakeita Stewart, director of sales for UScellular in the Mid-Atlantic. “We are so proud to celebrate all of our participants for the amazing work that they have done this year.”

UScellular also donated $32,300 to the club for STEM education and programs.
